Plumbing Costs in 2026
Plumbing costs have increased significantly since 2020 due to copper and PEX pipe price inflation and licensed plumber shortage. Standard drain-line installation runs $45–$85/hour for labor; specialized work like trenching, boring, or gas line installation typically $75–$150/hour.
The biggest cost drivers in plumbing projects: access (costs double if walls need opening vs. accessible crawlspace), pipe material choice (PEX is 40–60% cheaper than copper and faster to install), and permit scope (rerouting drain lines or replacing main line usually requires a permit; simple fixture replacements typically do not).
For septic systems, costs vary dramatically by site conditions — percolation rate, groundwater level, and available acreage determine system type. Gravity systems ($3,000–$8,000) are cheapest; aerobic systems with pump ($8,000–$15,000) are needed for poor soil. Always get a perc test before budgeting a new septic installation.
